This paper provides the reader with a methodological framework on how to evaluate the effectiveness of agricultural programmes. Several evaluation techniques are reviewed and examples of impact evaluations of agricultural programmes in Africa are provided for each methodology. Details are provided as to how the sample selection should be made, how the data should be collected and how the findings of the evaluation should be disseminated.
